What are the best Wordpress plugins?
Our next episode is on Content Management Systems, including Wordpress. I'd like to get some recommendations from the community on what Wordpress plug-ins you are using.
Plugins are the core of what makes Wordpress so powerful, and choosing the right ones will make your site easier to maintain, and far better for your customers to use. Sharing the best plugins will help other community members make sure they are using the best available.
Please post one plugin per answer so that readers can vote for their favorites using the voting buttons on the left of the answer.

Sociable
TweetMeme Retweet Button
WP Super Cache
Google Analyticator
WordPress Online Automated Backup
Platinum SEO - It's a branch from All In One, but fixes some minor issues with the original plugin.
SEO Smart Links - Allows you centrally manage links for specific keywords. For example if you put "google, http://google.com" in seo smart links ... every time google appears in you posts, it will be hyperlinked.
Quantcast Quantifier - A simple way to pull in the required quantcast javascript
WP-Post Thumbnail - allows you to crop and resize thumbnails within the browser (note: has a bug that you have to configure the plug-in first time in IE ... then it works in FF, Chrome, Safari)
Digg Digg - I think this is the best social bookmarking plugin. I like it because it uses the larger button styles and works with twitter, digg (obviously), reddit, stumble, facebook, etc. It's easier to configure and insert than some of the others. Sociable is ok, but I think this is better and on the sites where I have both, digg digg gets more clicks.
Meta Tag Manager - Lets you add the verification meta tags for Google Webmaster, and other things that require extra metatags.
Akismet - Stop spam comments in their tracks
Disqus - Social comment system that replaces default wordpress comments.
wptouch - Optimize your webpage for the iphone with one plugin
I also really like [supple forms][1]
[1]: http://www.whypad.com/posts/supple-forms-quick-start-guide/590/ It allows you to create a form in worpress and then specifiy on a template where the different fields go (like a mail merge).
Broken Link Checker
Broken Link Checker
supple forms
Allows you to create forms that can be used to add entries to the blog useful if you are outsourcing blog writing to other people. You can then lock down formats and event record repetitive values or strings in database tables for reporting
I will start this post by saying that I am a wordpress developer who has to make sure everything I set up for my client is as useable and easy to understand as possible. It reduces stress for the users, and keeps me from needing to train clients in extensive processes.
Ok, so.
First off, photo galleries. I have used them all, and a lot of the popular ones are great, but they aren't the most intuitive for my customers to update.
Also, you should be careful in choosing any photo gallery plugins that use flash. This is important, because just about all of the most popular ones do.
Flash doesn't work on iPhones or iPads. So, if showing off photographs of products or whatever, you are going to miss out on that. Don't discount those users, either.
My solution: DM Albums. It uses a jQuery tool to rotate albums instead of flash. jQuery is a highly featured code toolset that wordpress already comes with, and it is written in javascript, which works on everything.
DM Albums is also extremely easy to update your gallery on a post, page, etc. It's right there. My clients LOVE IT.
For putting a nice, full-featured image slider on your homepage, give the "Dynamic Content Gallery" a look.
DCG gives you the ability to put a very sophisticated looking image slider with text overlay, next / previous navigation overlay, and thumbnails, check out Dynamic Content Gallery. Just don't try doing the multiple category option. It's extremely frustrating. Instead, use the single category option, and create a new category called "featured". Then when you set up DCG, just tell it you want the featured category to show and now you have a very solid and sophisticated looking slider to grab the attention of your visitors.
You can see the demo here http://www.studiograsshopper.ch/dynamic-content-gallery/
When used properly, it's a very powerful way to grab the attention of customers who come to your homepage.
I just started using GeoPosty on a number of sites and like it. GeoPosty really is the first WordPress plugin of its kind. Yes, you can show your visitors their ip address, or track their location for your own purposes, but never before has it been so easy for a site admin to create dynamic content that responds to their user’s location in such a powerful way. It works in awesome ways:
Awesome way #1: You can put location-aware content anywhere on your WordPress site as a great way of reaching out to your users.
Awesome way #2: You allow the same page or post to show different messages to visitors from different locations by creating customized display locations for your targeted content.
Awesome way #3: You can establish geographically-specific redirects that will send your user to a different page on your site, depending on where they are.
Sorry, forgot to mention. I pasted in the text from the site as I thought they did a good job explaining. I read it after posting and realized it sounded like a commercial. My apologies.
I use Datafeedr to create an affiliate store on my Wordpress blog. It has tons of features and lets you aggregate multiple affiliate networks, merchants and their products into one online store. It will drip feed posts of a product to your blog from your own product list to keep fresh content coming as often as you wish. You can also add custom merchants and products to your store. It has a monthly cost, but if it helps you make more money, it is worth it. I love this plug-in.
I don't have all the categories filled yet but you can see how it looks if you want: http://AutomateLife.TV
Thanks, Mike
