Can anyone suggest a source with good, free Wordpress training videos?
I'm a Wordpress virgin, so they must be gentle.

Have you tried searching youtube? "wordpress tutorial"
Wordpress is great. You really need to install it on your own server though (you'll need a php server with some kind of installer). I have one with fantastico that makes it really easy to setup (just a push button).

Depends what you want to do. css-tricks.com have got some great ones about development. That's where I learnt to build my own themes for Wordpress. :-)
