Outsourcing to India/China
I am interested in having a basic, non-mechanical (although fairly large) product made in China/India, I would like to know step by step if possible how to go about finding a reliable manufacturer, paying, and having the item shipped in bulk to the US. Any and all input is welcome because I would like to learn as much as possible about this process. Thanks to all the contributors.
Keep up the great work Brandon and Matt.

Hey Joe, we are currently in the process of waiting for our first orders from china. Our product is not large, but it can be complicated. We are creating custom apparel, so this is a non-mechanical product. Because this is our first order with a custom specification order to China, we certainly know what you are feeling now. That being said we are taking AMSB motto of Fail small, Fail Fast, Fail Forward to the real world. This is from a newbie perspective; I especially look forward to all contributors sharing so that we can learn from each others mistakes, rough roads, and nickel & dime wins and the Big Wins!
We started out just talking to individuals in China through Alibaba. Eventually we set up with Alibaba's IM called "TradeManager"; I try to use the downloaded version so I can have copies of the conversations. We would request quotes on a "Custom Design" with as much details on fabric types, embellishments, etc. Once we started receiving inquiry responses, we would reply to their email for further clarification. We would attach a artistic sketch and a technical drawing of the product to the factories next. Once we receive the quote back then we start charting out the various responses and evaluate them based on clarity, product/industry knowledge, delivery time, materials, and lastly price.
I hope this helps somewhat and gives you some benefit.
