Retail POS system recommendation? (software)

Anyone with experience with Point of Sale (POS) for SMALL BUSINESS RETAIL? Our need is for 1 cash-register.

We have been using Intuit QuickBooks POS, but they have cut-off system usage (kill switch) until we upgrade to the newer version. What are the alternatives?

Is this a good question?

Great question. I'm happen to be doing some research on this topic myself. I will report what I learn soon.

Thanks Brandon; heard the comments on the podcast; Most seem more expensive than Intuit.

As I mentioned in the Podcast, I have recently been researching POS systems. It seems that the actual hardware is fairly common and standard. Except the use of a "touch screen" or not. It is basically a computer, cash drawer, barcode reader (wireless or wired), credit card reader/receipt printer.

The software is where you want to spend your time looking at the different options. I chose MINDBODY only because it offers what I'm looking for in a FITNESS STUDIO business. Memberships, check in, customer profiles, etc. This would not be a good choice for anything other than a fitness studio or gym.

However, I can say there are a few things that I like about it that you should consider in your search. I like that it is completely web based. This means that I don't have to back up on site, and that the customer can interact with it from our website (from the client side user interface). This also allows them to purchase online before they get to the store (a form of automation). This might not be what you need, but consider the benefits of a web based POS system. You might learn of new ways to automate your business by thinking outside the box, in that area.
