Keeping your idea
We are bootstrapping our business because we have little money but how to do make sure the idea isn’t stolen or copied by another business when we are a small business without patents?

You can file for a provisional patent. It's much cheaper than a full patent, but you'll have to be prepared to fully patent the idea a year from filing the provisional, otherwise your idea becomes unpatentable. Otherwise, just work in stealth mode and don't tell people what you're doing.
I am reading One simple idea by Steven Key, he gives great advice.
One piece of advice he gives, if you are creating something, get a tablet and write everything down. Date each entry. This is from conception, if you havent started begin now.
I have a product and am documenting everything step by step, materials for prototype, write it down.
Hope this helps,
Kate
